…Mother's Day: Don't keep mum on maternal health!...
It's a scandal that every minute a woman dies needlessly in pregnancy or childbirth. With their own health at risk, mothers in many parts of the world also face losing their children – last year almost nine million children under five died
Take action:
Send this Mother's Day e-card to the three party leaders before 12 March to show your support for mothers around the world.
In 2000, world leaders from 189 countries made a commitment to halve global poverty and reach the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. MDG-5 aims to reduce the number of maternal deaths by three-quarters. Ten years on, we’ve seen little progress and in many countries the problem has got worse.
With the general election coming this spring, we need to send a clear message to all political parties that the next government needs to urgently scale up its investment in maternal health. It must provide the funding desperately needed by poor countries to remove unaffordable health care fees and strengthen national health systems so that all women can access the health care they need.
As Professor Mahmoud Fathalla of the World Health Organisation said "Women are not dying because of diseases we can't treat... they are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving."
Show your support for mothers everywhere in 2010.
