Over the last few weeks the Robin Hood Tax movement has been growing at a phenomenal rate thanks to supporters like you.

Celebrities have been lending their weight to the campaign, and nearly a quarter of MPs have signed their names in support. Have you ever found yourself about to chuck a bunch of packing material after a big move or bringing home that new flat screen TV only to wonder if maybe you could recycle all those peanuts instead? If only you knew where to take them! Well, now you can find out in a hot minute. Earth911 has a toll-free hotline and website with an exhaustive directory of recycling and disposal centers near you. Now, while many municipalities have curbside recycling programs, we all know there are plenty of products that you can’t just pack up in a clear plastic bag and leave at the curb.

Recycling things like batteries, cell phones, gift cards, computers, game consoles, plastic bags, plastic bottle caps and those packing peanuts takes a little more forethought, but it can and should be done, whenever possible.

Earth911 started as a toll-free hotline and directory of recycling listings in 1991, but has since evolved into a website with all kinds of information on recycling, including daily news, feature stories and more.

But rather than ditch the phone system in favor of the website, Earth911 has recently upgraded its hotline to speed and simplify the process of accessing information. Now users can get location-specific information in a jiffy, without being tethered to the Internet. Earth911 also says the phone system is easier to navigate and even bilingual, so now Spanish-speaking Americans can use it, too.

You may recognize the hotline number: 1-800 CLEANUP is featured on hundreds of millions of products nationwide. Companies use it to direct their consumers to recycling and disposal options for hundreds of different items, including potentially toxic substances like paint and motor oil.

…Stop Ethnic Violence in Nigeria…

Over 10,000 lives have been claimed due to ethnic clashes between the indigenous peoples and the settlers of Nigeria--and that number is on the rise. With the recent massacres and increasing unrest between Nigerians, we must tell the Nigerian government work to create a peaceful environment for all.

Legislation passed with the 1999 Constitution ensures the inalienable rights of every Nigerian citizen, but the government has failed to successfully enforce these laws.

The ethnic tensions between the "indigene" and the "non-indigene" Nigerians are exacerbated by a lack of government involvement and, unless stopped, will continue to segregate Nigerians and breed violence.

"Non-indigenes" must be treated just as other citizens in their own country.

Take action and tell the Nigerian government to end institutional discrimination against non-indigenes.

You see, for months Greenpeace publicly pressured Trader Joe's supermarkets to adopt sustainable seafood purchasing policies throughout all of their stores in order to help save the oceans. The store ranked 17 out of the 20 when Greenpeace evaluated their seafood polices along with other supermarkets. It was clear, Trader Joe’s needed to do better.

After months of hearing from activists and shoppers like you about how important it is to stop destroying oceans for profit, Trader Joe’s finally turned over a new barnacle.

I’ve publicly announced that Trader Joe’s stores will remove red-listed seafood, implement a sustainable seafood policy, and work with third-party, science-based organizations to establish strong, lasting guidelines for ocean protection throughout our entire seafood operation.

Thank you for emailing Nestlé about the company's use of palm oil from Indonesia's devastated rainforests. Our campaign to stop Nestlé using palm oil from trashed rainforests has got off to a flying start - over 100,000 emails have been sent and our Kit Kat video has been viewed over 700,000 times. Not to mention the problems Nestlé has been experiencing on Facebook and elsewhere on the web. Absolutely incredible - thanks so much for your help so far.

However, we discovered that many of your emails have been blocked so, for your next assignment, we'd like you to go a step further and phone Nestlé's customer services line. Give them a bell instead to explain what the company needs to do if its executives are really as concerned about deforestation and climate change as they claim.

Be polite and remember that the person you're speaking to doesn't have the power to change Nestlé's palm oil policy. Ask them to pass on your message to CEO Paul Bulcke and for a response. If the line is busy, try again later - hopefully they'll be busy answering the same questions from other people. Lines are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

It's not acceptable for a company like Nestlé to use palm oil or other products such as paper which come from destroyed rainforests.

Nestlé must immediately stop buying palm oil or paper products from any of its suppliers, including Cargill, who are still buying from Sinar Mas, a company which is destroying the Indonesian rainforest.

Nestlé must commit to removing all palm oil from destroyed forests and peatlands from its supply chain now - it is not good enough to do better at some future date.

Nestlé must support a moratorium on deforestation in Indonesia, which also provides protection for peatland areas.

The Canadian commercial seal hunt is the largest marine-mammal slaughter in the world and 98% of harp seals hunted and killed are under 3 months old.

What's more, hunters are usually only interested in their pelts because there is no real market for seal meat. They leave the ice littered with carcasses.

Speaking in Prague in April 2009, President Obama said: "To put an end to Cold War thinking, we will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy, and urge others to do the same."

But, nuclear hawks in government want to strengthen our dangerous nuclear arsenal rather than seek nuclear disarmament. In a nod to the hawks, the Obama administration recently proposed $5 billion for enhancing nuclear weapons capabilities over the next five years.

The Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) -- the basis for nuclear policy -- is expected to be completed by the end of March. The NPR presents an unparalleled opportunity to show the world that the United States is serious about disarmament. In 2009, you stopped the IWC from allowing Greenland to kill 10 humpback whales.

Now the proposal to kill humpbacks is back and it’s being ‘squeezed through the backdoor’. At a meeting of the IWC being this Thursday and Friday, the vote is being ‘stacked’ to get this quota through.

Why such pressure?

The pro-whaling nations are worried that if they lose the vote on the humpbacks it may scupper their chances of overturning the ‘ban’ on commercial whaling too.

With your help we can stop the Greenland proposal and then we can have a clear run at stopping the commercial whaling vote too.

The European Union can block this latest proposal, but the EU has tied itself up with a legal procedural stalemate that is forcing all EU members to abstain on this vote, and this will allow the proposal to go through.

We cannot let this happen!

…In Haitians' Own Words: Thank You…

I’ve been moved by the tremendous outpouring of support we’ve received for our lifesaving work in Haiti.

We thought you’d like to hear "thank you" directly from Haitians you’re helping. Even as they struggle to cope with the devastation after the earthquake – losing their homes, their jobs, their friends and family – they wanted to thank you for the hope you’ve given.

Now it’s my turn to personally say thank you. When many Haitians thought they had no future after the earthquake struck, supporters of the World Food Programme generously stepped forward.

What we’ve been able to accomplish in Haiti, thanks to individuals like you, is truly remarkable. We have:

1. Provided more than 4 million people with food assistance. We’re also responding to the special needs of children and pregnant women.

2. Started cooking meals for schoolchildren in Port-au-Prince. The goal is to reach 72,000 children from some 148 schools. This is in addition to school meals programmes that have already resumed in many parts of the country.

3. Put nearly 500 staff on the ground, operating around the clock to ensure as many people as possible receive the food assistance they need.

That’s just the beginning of our urgent relief and recovery work in Haiti. Part of our recovery strategy is to support people who are at risk, boost attendance and learning through school meal programmes, and empower the local population to rebuild food security and their lives.

Throughout the weekend, we’ve been tracking two additional tragedies – flooding triggered by heavy rains in parts of Haiti where earthquake survivors are living in camps, and the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday.

While the quake was far stronger than the one that struck Haiti, human suffering in Chile will be far less extensive due to the location of the earthquake and the country’s long history in preparing for such disasters. Our teams are on standby to help if needed

I am heartened to know that individuals like you will step forward when called upon, not only to extend a lifeline in a crisis but also on behalf of the billion people who are chronically hungry around the world.

In a stunning instance of what can only be called collective cognitive dissonance, a small working group of the International Whaling Commission has just proposed we reinstate commercial whaling in order to save the whales.

Make no mistake: This proposal has nothing to do with saving whales, but is instead all about protecting the whaling industries of just a few obstinate countries who insist on destroying these amazing creatures. This proposal is the most serious threat to the moratorium on commercial whaling that we’ve seen since Greenpeace fought for and won the moratorium in the 80s.

While some US officials have been insisting that they are not supporting the proposal, we are very concerned about reports that the U.S. IWC Commissioner is not only supporting it but in fact pushing other countries to support it as well. The US position will be clarified at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission in St. Petersburg, FL next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Greenpeace vehemently opposes the proposal because:

It would allow whaling to take place in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary. Not only would the killing of whales there continue, it would be legitimized.

By legitimizing all whaling, the proposal would secure the future of whaling instead of seeking to phase it out. With a single stroke, this proposal would reverse nearly three decades of progress in protecting endangered whale species.

It will set interim quotas – the number of whales each country is allowed to catch – based on political need, not scientific evidence. Nothing could be more disastrous to fragile whale populations than caving to political pressure rather than listening to scientists about the best way to protect healthy whale populations.

Adding insult to injury, the proposal would pass the costs of regulating whaling on to all members of the IWC, meaning that the taxpayers of even anti-whaling countries will be forced to support whaling operations.

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has introduced legislation that would greatly aid in the expansion of rooftop solar-energy production in the United States. There is sufficient roof space in the United States to meet 20 percent of our electricity needs simply by installing solar panels.

Senator Sander's "10 Million Solar Roofs and 10 Million Gallons of Solar Water Heating Act of 2010" would help fund the installation of solar panels on 10 million homes and businesses across the country as well as the installation of 200,000 solar water heaters. This would produce about 30,000 new megawatts of energy, the equivalent of about 30 nuclear power plants.

Unlike industrial-scale solar projects, which when poorly sited can have unacceptable negative impacts on wildlife and wild places and often require new long-distance transmission lines, rooftop solar by definition only occurs in already developed areas. It is the greenest of green energy.

Northern Arizona's spectacular Kaibab National Forest, bordering the Grand Canyon, is under siege by off-road vehicles and too many roads -- but the U.S. Forest Service has so far ignored recommendations by the Center for Biological Diversity and allies for a road system that benefits species and habitat. Instead, the Forest Service is allowing hunters vehicle access across the forest to pick up downed game for up to a mile from any road. The problem? Since the area has so many roads, it's impossible to get more than a mile from an open road in any direction, outside a wilderness area, within the forest's boundaries.

Roads on the Kaibab are a major cause of erosion that contaminates the Verde and Little Colorado river watersheds, including habitat for the imperiled desert nesting bald eagle and endangered fish like the razorback sucker. The Center's recommended alternative would reduce road density to one mile of road per square mile of land, as well as preventing off-road driving to pick up downed game and to camp. And there's still time to encourage the Forest Service to take our proposal to heart -- but we need your help.

…Suits Launched to Save 93 Species from Extinction…

As part of our campaign to save America's 1,000 most endangered species, yesterday the Center for Biological Diversity filed four lawsuits seeking protection for 93 of them. The suits challenge the Obama administration's refusal to process scientific petitions to grant Endangered Species Act status to species across the nation, including the California golden trout, cactus ferruginous pygmy owl, and red tree vole.
In its first year in office, the Obama administration protected only two new species, the lowest first-year total of any president since Reagan. "We had hoped this administration would move far more quickly to provide protection for endangered species than Bush did, but so far this has not been the case," said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center. "Continued delay of protection places these 93 species in real jeopardy."

…Stop Forests From Becoming Energy Farms…

One of the biggest new threats to forests in the United States is a modern take on a very old idea: burning wood for energy. Dozens of large, dirty, wood-burning electricity facilities -- staggeringly inefficient -- are now being planned across the country. A single such facility would require increased logging on tens of thousands of acres of forest each year.

Based on the flawed premise that any burning of wood is carbon neutral, electricity generated by burning trees and wood wastes -- referred to as "biomass" -- is counted as renewable energy by numerous state and federal programs intended to shift our reliance away from fossil fuels. Unfortunately, biomass burning is far from carbon neutral.

Carbon dioxide released from the smokestack of a biomass facility warms the planet just like CO2 from a coal plant. And while an area logged to fuel a biomass facility may ultimately grow back, it takes decades or even centuries for a forest to recapture as much carbon as is lost when it's logged. We don't have decades to waste if we are to reduce our emissions fast enough to save the polar bear, coral reefs, and much of the world's biodiversity from global warming.

Take action today and protect our forests. The Department of Agriculture has proposed regulations that would expand a massive, misguided subsidy program that encourages the harvest and burning of trees for energy. Please act now to let federal officials know that tax dollars should not go to the timber industry and power companies to subsidize actions that pollute the air, undermine climate solutions, and contribute to deforestation.

…Call for justice in Japan…

Beginning February 15th two Greenpeace activists - Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki, known as the 'Tokyo Two' - will be on trial in Japan for their role in exposing major corruption in the government funded Japanese whaling industry.

Recently, a division of the United Nations Human Rights Council has ruled that the Tokyo Two's human rights have been breached by the Japanese justice system. This is the first ever such ruling of its kind for Japan.

Junichi and Toru have put their freedom and rights on the line to defend whales - please pledge your support for them. Tell the Japanese government that it is whaling that should be on trial - not those who oppose it.

Take Action to Protect Beluga Whale Habitat

Once numbering more than 1,000 whales, the Cook Inlet beluga has been reduced to just more than 300 individuals and is now threatened by oil and gas development, coal mining, pollution, shipping, and other impacts to its habitat: Cook Inlet, the fastest-growing watershed in Alaska.

In October 2008, federal officials responded to a petition and litigation by the Center for Biological Diversity and our allies by protecting Cook Inlet's magnificent beluga whale as an endangered species -- over the objections of then-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

But rather than designate federally protected critical habitat for the beluga at the time of listing -- as required by the Endangered Species Act -- the Fisheries Service deferred habitat protection for a year. After no action in a year, the Center formally notified the agency in October 2009 that we'd file a lawsuit to force the overdue habitat designation.

Last December, in response to the Center's efforts, the federal National Marine Fisheries Service finally took an important step toward protecting this imperiled whale's critical habitat by proposing to designate more than 3,000 square miles of habitat for protection.

The Fisheries Service is receiving pressure from the oil and coal industries as well as Alaska's congressional delegation to slash the beluga's critical habitat. The Service needs to hear from you to make sure that this proposal is expanded, not reduced, to ensure the imperiled Cook Inlet beluga whale's survival. Stop Shell's Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling in the Arctic

The Obama administration is poised to allow major petrochemical company Shell Oil to drill for gas and oil off the Alaskan coast this summer. If this goes through, Shell Oil will pump 1,800 tons of pollution into the fragile Arctic ecosystem in just six months.

The pristine Arctic ecosystem and its wildlife are already suffering the effects of past oil and gas development and this latest plan will only exacerbate the environmental destruction.

Help create the world's biggest Marine Reserve…

This could be a big week for the oceans, and it's one you can be part of, which is why I'm writing to ask for your help in creating the biggest Marine Reserve on the planet.
In 2008, the Pacific Island state of Kiribati created what was then the world's largest Marine Reserve in their own waters.
And last year George Bush (yes, really) went one better and created an even larger Marine Reserve in the US Pacific waters.
But now Britain has the chance to top both of them.
No-take Marine Reserves have a vital role to play in protecting our seas from destructive dredging and fishing. We urgently need more of them - scientists say that 20-50% of our oceans should be set aside and protected in this way. Reserves help our marine life withstand all of the other pressures we are creating, from climate change to destructive fishing practices.
Most obviously they also provide a vital refuge for the amazing plants and animals that live in our oceans, from slow growing corals, to turtles, sharks and seabirds, as well as a safe place for commercially-important fish species to recover and thrive.
So it's great news that our government is consulting over plans which could see us create the world’s largest Marine Reserve (26 times the size of Wales, fact-fans). The area in question is the Chagos archipelago, which contains 55 small islands, the world’s largest coral atoll, and about half of the pristine coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.
The government is now requesting your views on whether to protect this area as a Marine Reserve. But the window for comments is only open for a very limited time - in fact it closes next week on 12th February.
So, please take a minute to help. Email Foreign Secretary David Miliband and call on him to create a no-take Marine Reserve to protect the colourful coral reef life around the Chagos. And please ask your friends to add their voices as well - this definitely is one of these times where a few short words from a lot of us really can make a big difference.

You may think this is a Groundhog Day prank, or a massive case of deja vu... But here we go again. We've been campaigning for the Cape Wind project for more than eight years now, and we're almost there. But there is one more round to fight.

After all these years, the Cape Wind offshore wind power project still faces an uncertain future. But Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has said he will decide whether or not the project goes forward by February 12th — and he wants you to weigh in.

The Cape Wind offshore wind project would be great for Massachusetts: Its 130 wind turbines would generate up to 420 megawatts of clean, green electricity — enough to replace the current oil burning powerplant, reducing the region’s greenhouse gas emissions by 734,000 tons per year. That’s equivalent to taking 175,000 cars off the road, by some estimates.

But Cape Wind would also be great for the United States of America. As the only offshore wind farm likely to be approved and built during President Obama’s first term, its completion would go a long way toward showing the world that we are serious about cleaning up our act and converting to a clean energy economy. America needs to lead the world in solving global warming, and projects like Cape Wind are exactly how we can begin to do that.

We’re confident that the concerns about preserving the historic and cultural value of Nantucket Sound can be met while still moving forward with the Cape Wind project. In fact, the impacts of unchecked global warming — including sea level rise that would all but erase the region’s current coastline — are the far greater threat to Cape Cod. Building this first-of-its-kind wind farm in the US will be an important step towards tackling the climate crisis we’re facing right now and saving Cape Cod.

Tell Chevron to Clean Up its Toxic Legacy...

Chevron is responsible for one of the largest environmental disasters on the planet.

Over the course of 26 years of oil drilling in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest, U.S. oil giant Chevron deliberately dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest, leaving local people suffering a wave of cancers, miscarriages and birth defects. In spite of the tremendous suffering caused by this pollution, Chevron has refused to clean up the catastrophe.

Help Haiti today and tomorrow: Cancel the debt

I'm sure that you've seen the awful pictures and stories coming out of Haiti, following the devastating earthquake that struck last week.
Our biggest concern right now is dealing with the immediate aftermath. Oxfam staff are on the ground in Port-au-Prince.
Thanks to the generosity of the public, they are able to work with our partners in the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to begin to deliver vital aid to millions of people.
In the short-term Oxfam's main focus will continue to be helping the millions of people affected by this earthquake. If you haven't already, please donate to the Haiti emergency appeal.
But in our concern to help those suffering right now, let's not forget the long term. At the moment the world's attention is focused on Haiti. Leaders are pledging to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Haiti and help them build a brighter future out of the rubble.
There is one thing they can do right now to potentially transform the future prospects of Haiti. By cancelling the country's crippling debt, Haitian people can have a chance to build a brighter future.
Even before the earthquake, Haiti was weighed down by debt. They owed over $891 million to the The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and others. This is a legacy of loans to unelected governments of years past.
Leaders are meeting in Montreal on Monday to decide on the amount of aid that they will give. The IMF has said that it will work to cancel the debt, and this now needs to happen.
They have also offered a $100 million loan to Haiti but this should be converted into a grant. The head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has subsequently said that they will turn this loan into a grant but we need to make sure that he does everything that he can to make this happen.
If these debts aren't cancelled, Haiti will be sending tens of millions to the IMF and other international bodies even as it struggles to rebuild. If these debts are cancelled, the Haitian government will have a better chance to build their country, so that it is stronger than before.
Email the head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn to demand that when leaders meet on Monday they cancel Haiti's debts immediately.
